Mental Maths

The ability to calculate in one’s mind without the use of pen, paper or calculator is known as mental maths. It is a practical life skill that an individual uses almost every day but is unaware of. With technology taking over all aspects of our lives and calculators being readily available on our mobile phones, mental maths remains underdeveloped even though it is a very useful skill.

Developing the skill of mental maths in children from an early age will prove extremely beneficial to them in school helping them understand complex mathematical concepts easily. It is also a practical life skill that has many benefits outside of the classroom. Some of the benefits of learning mental maths are-

Practising mental maths stimulates both sides of the brain. The left hemisphere controls mathematical abilities while the right side controls imagination and creativity helping the individual to visualise the numbers and creatively figure out the solutions.

The ability to mentally perform calculations is an impressive skill and will help in boosting the self-confidence and self-esteem of the child.
